What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a sustainable method of growing food using fish waste as fertilizer in hydroponic grow beds.  Food and plants are grown in water, without soil, usually using a hydroponic grow media such as hydroton or lava rock.  The fish waste provides nutrients for the plants and the plants filter the water for the fish.  Having your own indoor aquaponic garden can be easy and very rewarding!

  1. Hi, I'm hoping you might be able to give me some advice. I noticed you have plants in planters above the rock. Which plants are those?

Have had any success with tomato plants. I have one that grew to the ceiling but didn't give me many tomatoes. Do you need to grow them in a separate grow bed because of how big the roots get?

Also, have you grown any cucumbers? Any tips, I haven't been successful with those either.

    1. Krunchy Dragon,
The plants growing in the planters are raddishes, which grow in a coconut fiber hydroton mix and watered/fed with the water from the aquaponic system.

Yes, I have grown hydroponic tomatoes in a separate 2'x2' grow bed. They will grow like crazy because of all the nitrogen, and not produce much (if any) fruit because of a lack of phosphorus. Did your tomatoes produce flowers at all? It's important that you pollinate those flowers when they do bloom. I got in the habit of just giving the vine a quick shake, maybe blow on them (if there wasn't already a fan nearby that was blowing) at least once a day. Also, I had better results vegging with the aquaponic's water and then switching to an organic nutrient feeding system high in phosphorus for fruiting.

I've only grown cucumbers outside so far, but I do know that they are similar to tomatoes in that they need to be pollinated and increased phosphorus :-)

Hope that helps answer some questions, feel free to ask more. Happy growing to you!

  4. If more people realized how easy aquaponics gardening really is, they would waste no time just jumping in and getting their first grow underway. This is such a great, sustainable way to grow herbs & vegetables, and with the right set-up it can be done in small spaces as well.

  5. I do have an aquaponic set up & just got another 100 fish yesterday. I know a some folks that use rock dust here in Australia along with things like Seasol (seaweed emulsion) worm tea to help boost the levels of the micro nutrients..
Did you know that you can also use aquaponics to grow in soil for the double whammy of nutrients?

Recently i am also wanted to starting indoor gardening with grow tent. Now i am searching for best grow tent.
